York Symphony Orchestra: Schubert’s Unfinished

Programming Our season concludes with Schubert’s seminal “Unfinished Symphony” and Mendelssohn’s “Symphony-cantata Hymn of Praise.” Schubert composed the first two movements of his 8th symphony before his untimely death at age 31. Perhaps one of music’s greatest unanswered questions is why the work remained “Unfinished.” The York Symphony Chorus joins the orchestra on Mendelssohn’s “Symphony-cantata.” Mendelssohn wrote this symphony to honor the unveiling the statue of Gutenberg. Inspired by Böcklin’s painting of a small boat on the unwelcoming sea near an island, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s The Isle of the Dead portrays the menacing waves concluding with a jubilation of reaching the island. Franz Liszt’s victorious Hunnenschlacht was devised from Battle of the Huns painting. York Symphony Orchestra Season Finale: Puccini & Pictures

The Season Finale features Giacomo Puccini’s Messa di Gloria with soloists, Spencer Hamlin and Marcus Deloach, as well the York Symphony Chorus. Beloved opera composer Puccini composed his Messa di Gloria by incorporating Italian operatic influences and theatrical melodies. Mussorgsky’s seminal Pictures at an Exhibition closes out the season with an epic reflection of Viktor Hartmann’s drawings. Taylor M. Baublitz has joined the Board of The Parliament Arts Organization. The Parliament Arts Organization is a non-profit arts collective in the Royal Square District of Downtown York focused on empowering artists and transforming York through its gallery shows, events, and workshops to support artists. Margaret “Mieke” Driscoll, Chair of the Firm’s Business Practice Group, has been named to the Powder Mill Foundation Board of Trustees.
