Since the early 19th century, the state of Pennsylvania has operated nearly 50 different state institutions for people with intellectual and mental disabilities. Author Rich Wagner will present on the history of brewing in York from the borough’s earliest breweries to present day. – Rich Wagner has been researching Pennsylvania brewing history since 1980. In 1990 he brewed at Pennsbury Manor using reproductions of seventeenth century equipment. Two years later he worked with a cooper to make his own system to demonstrate the brewing process of antiquity at historical sites and festivals. In 1994 he earned a diploma in brewing technology from the Siebel Institute in Chicago and worked in Philadelphia craft breweries over a seven year period. Since his retirement as a… read more »

Each October the York County History Center celebrates its Colonial heritage by hosting an Oyster Festival in downtown York, PA. The inspiration for the History Center’s longest-running fundraiser began with the discovery of oyster shells during the archaeological dig behind the Golden Plough Tavern in the 1960s. This year the History Center is determined to hold this community-loved event. Due to supply chain issues and vendor employee shortages, this year’s Oyster Festival is going to look a bit different.
