Summer Associates
CGA Law Firm’s Summer Associate Program offers a comprehensive, substantive and rewarding opportunity to law students. The Program is designed to expose participants to the many practice areas available at CGA, to enhance research and writing skills, and to aid in professional development.
Assignments and Feedback
CGA provides summer associates with a diverse and stimulating array of projects throughout each practice area in the Firm. They will gain experience in the areas of litigation, employment law, family law, bankruptcy, real estate, health, municipal, business, estates and school law. This comprehensive list of practice areas offers summer associates the opportunity to engage in various research projects with many attorneys in the Firm. Summer associates expand their substantive and procedural legal knowledge by receiving assignments to draft documents, write briefs and help attorneys prepare for trial.
CGA encourages summer associates to experience the practical side of the practice of law, too. They are asked to attend real estate closings, depositions, hearings, oral arguments, trials, negotiations and board meetings. These experiences help to transition law students from academia to actually practicing law.
Summer associates are expected to log a full-time work week of at least 37.5 hours. Both billable and non-billable hours are tracked.
At the conclusion of the Program, each summer associate will have an exit interview with the program coordinators. The Program also allows CGA to evaluate and come to know potential candidates for full-time employment. CGA encourages all participants to apply, however an offer for full-time employment after the conclusion of the Program depends upon the availability of positions and the Firm’s evaluation of the summer associate’s performance, work ethic and ability to interact well with attorneys, staff and clients.
Mentoring
One of the most important aspects of the Summer Associate Program is meeting, interacting with and getting to know our attorneys. Every attorney can offer valuable advice, as each person contributes to the success of the Firm. To facilitate meaningful mentor relationships, our summer associates attend lunch with a different attorney each week, having the opportunity to discuss cases, ask substantive legal questions, and get to know one another informally. Summer Associates are also invited to attend and participate in monthly attorney and practice group meetings.
Social Activities
CGA believes in a strong balance between hard work and enjoying the camaraderie that comes from being a part of the CGA team. Summer associates are able to get to know our attorneys outside of the office in a more relaxed setting. They are invited to attend a number of social events including baseball games in the York Revolution Skybox, sporting clay shoots, picnics, happy hour gatherings, and more.
The Program offers a valuable learning experience that allows students to take an active role in substantive legal matters and to work closely with legal professionals, staff and clients. CGA is committed to teaching and mentoring summer associates and providing the support and resources needed for them to have a successful experience.
