CGA Law firm announces the retirement of Jack M. Hartman after fifty years of distinguished legal practice. Jack joined CGA in 2015 and has served as Chair of the Litigation Department, Co-Chair of the Professional Development Committee, Shareholder, and Of Counsel. Jack’s practice included complex civil litigation, health law, and alternative dispute resolution. He was instrumental in building the litigation and health law capacity of the Firm and mentoring its members.
Jack graduated from Davidson College and Dickinson School of Law and began his legal career as a Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. His career as a litigator continued first in private practice with two prominent law firms in Harrisburg, where he solidified his reputation as a trial attorney. This led to the opportunity to create an in-house litigation position for the self-insured Geisinger Health System, where he soon became a Senior Vice President of Legal Services, acting as General Counsel to the expanding healthcare system based in Danville.
Jack was recruited from Geisinger to head the health law group of a national law firm, and then he decided to start his own Firm back in Harrisburg, specializing in medical malpractice defense and health law. His success in court earned him a reputation as one of the most respected trial attorneys in Pennsylvania. Jack considers his move to CGA as a great environment in which to end his career, including the ability to remain Of Counsel, working remotely from Long Island where he moved in 2023 in connection with his wife’s employment opportunity with NYU Langone Health.
Jack has many interests outside of the law and has continued to pursue acting, directing, writing roles in local theater, massage therapy as a licensed professional therapist, and has written a novel fictionalizing the life of a medical malpractice defense attorney. The medical-legal thriller, No Favorite Child, has received positive reviews for the realistic presentation of the legal, medical, and ethical challenges of defending physicians and hospitals against litigation brought as a result of an unexpected medical outcome. Jack also held board positions as part of his community service commitment and thoroughly enjoyed participating in the performances of the Bar Stools productions of the York County Bar Association.
